Frequently asked questions about IBANs
IBAN basics, how the generator works and how to use test IBANs safely.
IBAN basics
What is an IBAN?
The International Bank Account Number is a standard (ISO 13616) for identifying a bank account across borders. It starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by the national account number, called the BBAN. Each country sets its own length and layout.
What is MOD-97 validation?
MOD-97 is the check digit method of the IBAN standard, taken from ISO 7064. Move the first four characters to the end, turn letters into numbers (A = 10 up to Z = 35) and divide by 97. A correct IBAN leaves a remainder of 1. Every IBAN this site generates passes the check.
Why do IBAN lengths differ by country?
Each country decides how long its national account number is and what goes into it. Norway's IBANs have 15 characters, Malta's have 31. The generator follows each country's format exactly.
What is the difference between an IBAN and a SWIFT/BIC code?
An IBAN identifies an account. A BIC, also called SWIFT code, identifies a bank or one of its branches. Transfers outside the SEPA area often need both; inside SEPA the IBAN alone is enough.
Where can I find the official IBAN specification?
The IBAN is defined by ISO 13616. SWIFT, the registration authority, publishes the IBAN Registry with the exact format of every participating country.
About the generator
Are the generated IBANs real?
No. They have a valid structure (right length, format and MOD-97 check digits), but no bank issued them. Use them for testing, development and learning.
Can I use these IBANs for real payments?
No. A generated IBAN is random. The chance that it matches a real account is very small but not zero, so never send money to one. Use them only in test environments, demos and examples.
Which countries are supported?
91 countries, including all 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Each country page shows its exact format.
Do you store the IBANs I generate?
No. Each IBAN is generated when you ask for it and is not saved. You do not need an account, and we do not track which IBANs you generate.
Is the service free?
Yes. The generator is free and needs no account. API keys are issued on request by email.
How do I copy the generated IBAN?
Press Copy. With Electronic selected you copy it without spaces, which is what most forms expect; with Print you copy it in groups of four. If your browser blocks clipboard access, select the IBAN and copy it by hand.
Which languages is the site available in?
English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Arabic. Switch language from the menu at the top of every page.
Can I generate many IBANs at once?
Yes. Open "Generate a list" under the generator: it makes 5 to 100 IBANs of one country, which you can copy all at once or download as CSV, JSON, SQL or plain text. For several countries, or from your own code, use the API: up to 100 IBANs per request.
For developers
Can I use this in automated tests?
Yes. Use the REST API (see API documentation) in test suites and CI pipelines, or the public MCP server with AI agents. If your tests run offline, generate a set of IBANs once and keep them as fixtures.
Can you validate an existing IBAN?
Yes. The IBAN validator checks the country, length, BBAN format and MOD-97 check digits of any IBAN in your browser and shows exactly what is wrong. From code, use the validate endpoints of the API, described in the API documentation.
How do I get API access?
Send us an email with a short description of your use case and we will reply with a key. The details are on the API page.
