In the pattern, n stands for a digit, a for an uppercase letter and c for a letter or digit. The number before each letter is how many characters that block has.
National check digits
Besides the two IBAN check digits, FR IBANs carry national check digits inside the BBAN, at positions 26–27. They come from the domestic account number and follow a national rule.
This is the clé RIB: 97 minus the remainder of 89 × bank code + 15 × branch code + 3 × account number, divided by 97. Letters in the account number first become digits (A and J count as 1, B, K and S as 2, and so on).
This generator calculates them with the official algorithm, in both modes, so validators that check them accept the IBANs on this page.
Because of this check, an all-digit BBAN always leaves the same remainder when divided by 97, so every FR IBAN whose account number has only digits starts with FR76. Letters in the account number change the check digits.

Real bank codes in realistic mode
In realistic mode, the default, the generator takes the bank code from this list and keeps the account number random, so no bank issued these IBANs. With Realistic off, the bank code is random too.

What to test with FR IBANs
- Accept exactly 27 characters for FR, after removing spaces, and reject 26 or 28.
- Letters or digits at positions 15–25: a digits-only regex rejects valid FR IBANs. Realistic mode, the default, uses digits only there; with Realistic off, the generator puts letters there about half the time.
- For a negative test of the national check, change the character at position 26 and recalculate the IBAN check digits (the validator suggests them). The IBAN then passes MOD-97 but fails the national check.
- Same structure as Monaco (MC). The country code is part of the MOD-97 calculation, so a valid FR IBAN with another country code in front must fail.
- Ready-made invalid values for negative tests: FR1420041010050500013M02607 (last character changed, MOD-97 fails) and FR1420041010050500013M0260 (one character missing).
- Bank directory checks: by default the generator uses real bank codes such as 30003 (Société Générale), and random ones with Realistic off, so you can test a known and an unknown bank.
About IBANs in France
French IBANs have 27 characters and carry the old domestic RIB inside them: a 5-digit bank code, a 5-digit branch code (code guichet), an 11-character account number and the 2-digit RIB key (clé RIB). The account number can contain letters, so a validator that expects only digits will reject real French IBANs. The RIB key is a national check, separate from the IBAN check digits. France was the first country to issue IBANs, in 1997.

How long is an IBAN in France?
27 characters: the country code FR, two check digits and a national part (BBAN) of 23 characters.
What does an IBAN from France look like?
For example FR14 2004 1010 0505 0001 3M02 606. That is the print format, in groups of four. Forms and files usually take it without spaces: FR1420041010050500013M02606.
Can French IBANs contain letters?
Yes. Letters or digits are allowed at positions 15–25, and the registry example has 0500013M026 there.
Where is the bank code in French IBANs?
The bank code, at positions 5–9: 20041 in the registry example. The branch code is at positions 10–14 (01005). By default (realistic mode) the generator uses real bank codes, such as 30004 for BNP Paribas.
Will a test IBAN for France pass validation?
It passes the checks most forms run: country code, length, character format and MOD-97 check digits. The national check digits inside the BBAN are computed with the official algorithm, so a validator that also checks them accepts this IBAN. In realistic mode, the default, the bank code is real too, so a bank directory check accepts it. An account lookup or a payee name check will not confirm it, because the account number is random.
Can I use a generated French IBAN to sign up for a service or receive money?
No. It is test data that no bank issued to you. Money sent to it is rejected or, if the number happens to belong to someone, reaches a stranger, and using it for a sign-up, a free trial or a direct debit is misuse. Your own IBAN is in your banking app and on your statements.
