Burundian IBAN generator

IBANs in Burundi have 27 characters and start with BI. The one below is random, follows the national structure and passes the MOD-97 check, so form validation accepts it. No bank issued it.

In CSV, JSON and SQL, every IBAN segment (bank, branch, account, check digits) gets its own column.

MOD-97 valid

Realistic mode: digits only. There are no verified bank codes for this country yet, so the bank code stays random. Never use it for payments.

Structure BIkk bbbbb sssss ccccccccccc xx
Example, electronic BI4210000100010000332045181
Example, print BI42 1000 0100 0100 0033 2045 181

Position by position

Segment Positions Length Example
Country 1–2 2 BI
Check digits 3–4 2 42
Bank code 5–9 5 10000
Branch code 10–14 5 10001
Account number 15–25 11 00003320451
National check 26–27 2 81

In the pattern, n stands for a digit, a for an uppercase letter and c for a letter or digit. The number before each letter is how many characters that block has.

National check digits

Besides the two IBAN check digits, BI IBANs carry national check digits inside the BBAN, at positions 26–27. They come from the domestic account number and follow a national rule.

We have not found an official description of this check, so the generator fills these digits at random. A validator that checks them may reject the IBAN.

How national check digits work

What to test with BI IBANs

  • Accept exactly 27 characters for BI, after removing spaces, and reject 26 or 28.
  • Digits only after the check digits: a validator for BI should reject any letter there.
  • Same structure as Mauritania (MR). The country code is part of the MOD-97 calculation, so a valid BI IBAN with another country code in front must fail.
  • Ready-made invalid values for negative tests: BI4210000100010000332045182 (last character changed, MOD-97 fails) and BI421000010001000033204518 (one character missing).
  • Bank directory checks: the bank code is random in both modes, so a directory lookup will usually fail.

About IBANs in Burundi

Burundian IBANs are 27 characters long and numeric: a 5-digit bank code, a 5-digit branch code, an 11-digit account number and 2 control digits. The account number printed on Burundian cheques also contains a 3-digit currency code, which is not part of the IBAN. Burundi's format took effect in 2021.

Questions about IBANs in Burundi

How long is an IBAN in Burundi?

27 characters: the country code BI, two check digits and a national part (BBAN) of 23 characters.

What does an IBAN from Burundi look like?

For example BI42 1000 0100 0100 0033 2045 181. That is the print format, in groups of four. Forms and files usually take it without spaces: BI4210000100010000332045181.

Can Burundian IBANs contain letters?

No. After the check digits, BI IBANs contain only digits: the BBAN pattern is 5n5n11n2n.

Where is the bank code in Burundian IBANs?

The bank code, at positions 5–9: 10000 in the registry example. The branch code is at positions 10–14 (10001).

Will a test IBAN for Burundi pass validation?

It passes the checks most forms run: country code, length, character format and MOD-97 check digits. The national check digits inside the BBAN are random here, so a validator that also verifies the national check used in Burundi may reject it. Checks that need bank data will usually reject it: the bank code is random, and an account lookup or a payee name check will not confirm the account.

Can I use a generated Burundian IBAN to sign up for a service or receive money?

No. It is test data that no bank issued to you. Money sent to it is rejected or, if the number happens to belong to someone, reaches a stranger, and using it for a sign-up, a free trial or a direct debit is misuse. Your own IBAN is in your banking app and on your statements.
