In the pattern, n stands for a digit, a for an uppercase letter and c for a letter or digit. The number before each letter is how many characters that block has.

National check digits

Besides the two IBAN check digits, RU IBANs carry national check digits inside the BBAN, at position 22. They come from the domestic account number and follow a national rule.

This is the control key set by the Bank of Russia. The last three digits of the BIK bank code and the 20-digit account number, with the key set to 0, are multiplied by the weights 7, 1, 3 in turn. The last digits of the products are added up, and the key is the last digit of 3 times that sum.

This generator calculates them with the official algorithm, in both modes, so validators that check them accept the IBANs on this page.

How national check digits work

Real bank codes in realistic mode

In realistic mode, the default, the generator takes the bank code from this list and keeps the account number random, so no bank issued these IBANs. With Realistic off, the bank code is random too.

Sberbank 044525225
VTB Bank 044525187
Gazprombank 044525823
Alfa-Bank 044525593

What to test with RU IBANs

  • Accept exactly 33 characters for RU, after removing spaces, and reject 32 or 34. This is the longest format in the IBAN Registry: check that form fields and database columns take all 33 characters.
  • The registry pattern allows letters at positions 19–33, but the national check digits need an all-digit BBAN, so this generator uses digits there.
  • For a negative test of the national check, change the character at position 22 and recalculate the IBAN check digits (the validator suggests them). The IBAN then passes MOD-97 but fails the national check.
  • Ready-made invalid values for negative tests: RU0304452522540817810538091310410 (last character changed, MOD-97 fails) and RU030445252254081781053809131041 (one character missing).
  • Bank directory checks: by default the generator uses real bank codes such as 044525187 (VTB Bank), and random ones with Realistic off, so you can test a known and an unknown bank.

About IBANs in Russia

Russian IBANs have 33 characters, the longest format in the IBAN Registry. The BBAN is the 9-digit BIK bank code and the 20-digit account number, whose first 5 digits (the balance account) the registry labels as a branch identifier. The account number's 9th digit is a control key calculated from the BIK. The Bank of Russia recommends the format, used from 1 April 2023, for cross-border transfers.

Questions about IBANs in Russia

How long is an IBAN in Russia?

33 characters: the country code RU, two check digits and a national part (BBAN) of 29 characters.

What does an IBAN from Russia look like?

For example RU03 0445 2522 5408 1781 0538 0913 1041 9. That is the print format, in groups of four. Forms and files usually take it without spaces: RU0304452522540817810538091310419.

Can Russian IBANs contain letters?

Yes. Letters or digits are allowed at positions 19–33, although the registry example has only digits there.

Where is the bank code in Russian IBANs?

The bank code, at positions 5–13: 044525225 in the registry example. By default (realistic mode) the generator uses real bank codes, such as 044525225 for Sberbank.

Will a test IBAN for Russia pass validation?

It passes the checks most forms run: country code, length, character format and MOD-97 check digits. The national check digits inside the BBAN are computed with the official algorithm, so a validator that also checks them accepts this IBAN. In realistic mode, the default, the bank code is real too, so a bank directory check accepts it. An account lookup or a payee name check will not confirm it, because the account number is random.

Can I use a generated Russian IBAN to sign up for a service or receive money?

No. It is test data that no bank issued to you. Money sent to it is rejected or, if the number happens to belong to someone, reaches a stranger, and using it for a sign-up, a free trial or a direct debit is misuse. Your own IBAN is in your banking app and on your statements.
