Realistic mode: real bank code, random account number. No bank issued this IBAN, but it could match a real account by chance. Never use it for payments.

Position by position

Segment Positions Length Example
Country 1–2 2 TL
Check digits 3–4 2 38
Bank code 5–7 3 008
Account number 8–21 14 00123456789101
National check 22–23 2 57

In the pattern, n stands for a digit, a for an uppercase letter and c for a letter or digit. The number before each letter is how many characters that block has.

National check digits

Besides the two IBAN check digits, TL IBANs carry national check digits inside the BBAN, at positions 22–23. They come from the domestic account number and follow a national rule.

They use ISO 7064 MOD 97-10, the same method as the IBAN check digits, applied to the digits in front of them: 98 minus the remainder of that number, times 100, divided by 97.

This generator calculates them with the official algorithm, in both modes, so validators that check them accept the IBANs on this page.

Because of this check, the whole BBAN always leaves the same remainder when divided by 97, so every valid TL IBAN has the same IBAN check digits: TL38.

How national check digits work

Real bank codes in realistic mode

In realistic mode, the default, the generator takes the bank code from this list and keeps the account number random, so no bank issued these IBANs. With Realistic off, the bank code is random too.

Bank Bank code
BNU (Caixa Geral de Depósitos) 002
ANZ 003
Banco Nacional de Comércio de Timor-Leste 004
Bank Mandiri 005
Bank Rakyat Indonesia 006

What to test with TL IBANs

  • Accept exactly 23 characters for TL, after removing spaces, and reject 22 or 24.
  • Digits only after the check digits: a validator for TL should reject any letter there.
  • For a negative test of the national check, change the character at position 22 and recalculate the IBAN check digits (the validator suggests them). The IBAN then passes MOD-97 but fails the national check.
  • Ready-made invalid values for negative tests: TL380080012345678910158 (last character changed, MOD-97 fails) and TL38008001234567891015 (one character missing).
  • Bank directory checks: by default the generator uses real bank codes such as 003 (ANZ), and random ones with Realistic off, so you can test a known and an unknown bank.

About IBANs in Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste IBANs have 23 characters, all digits: a 3-digit bank number, a 14-digit account number and 2 national check digits calculated with MOD 97 over the bank and account numbers. Those check digits make the IBAN check digits constant, so every Timorese IBAN starts with TL38. IBANs have been mandatory for interbank payments, except cheque clearing, since 12 January 2015.

Questions about IBANs in Timor-Leste

How long is an IBAN in Timor-Leste?

23 characters: the country code TL, two check digits and a national part (BBAN) of 19 characters.

What does an IBAN from Timor-Leste look like?

For example TL38 0080 0123 4567 8910 157. That is the print format, in groups of four. Forms and files usually take it without spaces: TL380080012345678910157.

Can Timor-Leste IBANs contain letters?

No. After the check digits, TL IBANs contain only digits: the BBAN pattern is 3n14n2n.

Where is the bank code in Timor-Leste IBANs?

The bank code, at positions 5–7: 008 in the registry example. By default (realistic mode) the generator uses real bank codes, such as 002 for BNU (Caixa Geral de Depósitos).

Will a test IBAN for Timor-Leste pass validation?

It passes the checks most forms run: country code, length, character format and MOD-97 check digits. The national check digits inside the BBAN are computed with the official algorithm, so a validator that also checks them accepts this IBAN. In realistic mode, the default, the bank code is real too, so a bank directory check accepts it. An account lookup or a payee name check will not confirm it, because the account number is random.

Can I use a generated Timor-Leste IBAN to sign up for a service or receive money?

No. It is test data that no bank issued to you. Money sent to it is rejected or, if the number happens to belong to someone, reaches a stranger, and using it for a sign-up, a free trial or a direct debit is misuse. Your own IBAN is in your banking app and on your statements.
