Maltese IBAN generator

IBANs in Malta have 31 characters and start with MT. The one below is random, follows the national structure and passes the MOD-97 check, so form validation accepts it. No bank issued it.

Format

MT03VALL22013474360106623936976

  1. Country MT
  2. Check digits 03
  3. Bank code VALL
  4. Branch code 22013
  5. Account number 474360106623936976
Generate a list Up to 100 IBANs, as CSV, JSON, SQL or plain text

In CSV, JSON and SQL, every IBAN segment (bank, branch, account, check digits) gets its own column.

MOD-97 valid

Realistic mode: real bank code, random account number. No bank issued this IBAN, but it could match a real account by chance. Never use it for payments.

Check an IBAN

Paste an IBAN from any country to check its length, format and check digits.

Maltese IBAN format

Length, pattern and the position of each segment in MT IBANs, with a sample IBAN.

IBAN length 31
BBAN length 27
BBAN pattern 4a5n18c
Structure MTkk aaaa bbbbb cccccccccccccccccc
Example, electronic MT84MALT011000012345MTLCAST001S
Example, print MT84 MALT 0110 0001 2345 MTLC AST0 01S
Letters in the BBAN Positions 5–8: always letters
Positions 14–31: letters or digits
National check digits None
SEPA Member (EPC list, December 2025)
Source SWIFT IBAN Registry, Release 102 (June 2026)

Position by position

Segment Positions Length Example
Country 1–2 2 MT
Check digits 3–4 2 84
Bank code 5–8 4 MALT
Branch code 9–13 5 01100
Account number 14–31 18 0012345MTLCAST001S

In the pattern, n stands for a digit, a for an uppercase letter and c for a letter or digit. The number before each letter is how many characters that block has.

Real bank codes in realistic mode

In realistic mode, the default, the generator takes the bank code from this list and keeps the account number random, so no bank issued these IBANs. With Realistic off, the bank code is random too.

Bank Bank code Branch code
Bank of Valletta VALL 22013
BNF Bank BNIF 14502
Lombard Bank Malta LBMA 05000

What to test with MT IBANs

  • Accept exactly 31 characters for MT, after removing spaces, and reject 30 or 32.
  • Letters are required at positions 5–8. Test lowercase input too, and convert it to uppercase before you validate.
  • Letters or digits at positions 14–31: a digits-only regex rejects valid MT IBANs. Realistic mode, the default, uses digits only there; with Realistic off, the generator puts letters there about half the time.
  • Ready-made invalid values for negative tests: MT84MALT011000012345MTLCAST001T (last character changed, MOD-97 fails) and MT84MALT011000012345MTLCAST001 (one character missing).
  • Bank directory checks: by default the generator uses real bank codes such as BNIF (BNF Bank), and random ones with Realistic off, so you can test a known and an unknown bank.

About IBANs in Malta

Maltese IBANs have 31 characters, the longest format in the European Union. The BBAN combines a 4-letter bank code from the BIC, a 5-digit sort code and an 18-character account number. That length makes Malta a good edge case for input fields and database columns that are too short.

Questions about IBANs in Malta

How long is an IBAN in Malta?

31 characters: the country code MT, two check digits and a national part (BBAN) of 27 characters.

What does an IBAN from Malta look like?

For example MT84 MALT 0110 0001 2345 MTLC AST0 01S. That is the print format, in groups of four. Forms and files usually take it without spaces: MT84MALT011000012345MTLCAST001S.

Can Maltese IBANs contain letters?

Yes. MT IBANs always have uppercase letters at positions 5–8: MALT in the registry example. Letters or digits are allowed at positions 14–31, and the registry example has 0012345MTLCAST001S there.

Where is the bank code in Maltese IBANs?

The bank code, at positions 5–8: MALT in the registry example. The branch code is at positions 9–13 (01100). By default (realistic mode) the generator uses real bank codes, such as VALL for Bank of Valletta.

Will a test IBAN for Malta pass validation?

It passes the checks most forms run: country code, length, character format and MOD-97 check digits. In realistic mode, the default, the bank code is real too, so a bank directory check accepts it. An account lookup or a payee name check will not confirm it, because the account number is random.

Can I use a generated Maltese IBAN to sign up for a service or receive money?

No. It is test data that no bank issued to you. Money sent to it is rejected or, if the number happens to belong to someone, reaches a stranger, and using it for a sign-up, a free trial or a direct debit is misuse. Your own IBAN is in your banking app and on your statements.
